Read MoreSierra Baker, an eighth grader at Lime Kiln Middle School, has been an active participant in Recreation & Parks’ programs since 2002. In 2007, she was one of the first to sign up for the newly offered Youth Volleyball program. Since joining the league, Sierra has always shown great respect and sportsmanship during practices, clinics and matches. She has grown not only in her skills but also in her confidence to support the success of others. She is the first to volunteer to assist coaches during practices and lend a helping hand to the younger and less experienced players; and, no matter the situation, Sierra always has a smile on her face. Frank Curley is a 19-year coaching veteran who successfully guides Howard County athletes during three sports seasons each year. He coaches fall football for the Elkridge Hurricanes; winter basketball for the Columbia Ravens; and spring lacrosse for the Howard County Lacrosse Program. “We are proud that Sierra and Frank have been selected to receive the GoodSports award and represent Howard County’s athletes and coaches, respectively. Sierra is a great athlete and role model who consistently demonstrates what it means to be respectful, show commitment to her team and be an all around good sport,” said County Executive Ken Ulman. “Frank is an excellent coach and mentor who works hard to make sure his players learn a lot and have a quality sports experience.” Both Sierra and Frank were among the 42 GoodSports recipients representing 19 local sports organizations honored locally at Howard County’s annual 2009 Celebration of Sports held in October. Sierra was selected to represent county athletes at the statewide ceremony, and Frank was selected to represent county coaches. Gary Arthur, Director of Howard County Recreation & Parks said, “Howard County is fortunate that the number of young athletes demonstrating the GoodSports concept continues to grow, thanks to the efforts of administrators, coaches and parents. It is refreshing to know that, at the fundamental level, there are players and coaches like Sierra and Frank who fully understand what youth sports are all about – participation and good sportsmanship. ” The GoodSports award winners will be honored on Monday, February 15, at a reception at the Maryland State House in Annapolis co-hosted by the Alliance and Speaker of the House Michael Busch. Members of the Howard County Delegation will be on hand for the awards presentation in the House Chamber immediately after the reception. The Mid-Atlantic Recreation and Parks’ Sports Alliance is a consortium of Recreation and Parks departments, organizations representing sports officials, and youth sports associations in the region. Each member organization designated one player and one adult for the GoodSports Award. The mission of the Alliance is to develop and communicate a consistent message that organizations and their players, coaches and spectators will be held accountable to a code of conduct that promotes sportsmanship and that keeps recreational sporting activities in proper perspective. | |||||||
