Calvin Ball

The Honorable Doctor Calvin Ball was elected in 2006 to represent District Two of Howard County including the communities of Long Reach and Oakland Mills in East Columbia, as well as portions of Elkridge, Ellicott City, and Jessup.

On December 4, 2006, Dr. Ball made Howard County history when he was elected the youngest Chairperson ever to lead the County Council. In addition, he has had the honor to serve as Chairperson of the Zoning Board and is currently serving as Chairperson of the Board of License Commissioners, also known as the Liquor Board.

Dr. Ball is a Maryland native and a proud resident of Columbia. His devotion to our community began while serving as a Howard County Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician. He has remained dedicated to community service and became increasingly active after serving three terms on the Oakland Mills Village Board. He has the distinct honor of being the first Community Organizer in Howard County where he facilitated neighborhood revitalization in the Village of Oakland Mills. His passion for the community extends to our education system as well. As an assistant professor in the Department of Advanced Studies, Leadership and Policy at Morgan State University (MSU), he realizes the importance of partnerships between educators, community members and businesses. He has had the privilege to serve as a member of various committees including the Howard County Chamber of Commerce’s Educator of the Year and Workforce Readiness preparing our residents for real-life scenarios.

Continuing his commitment to our residents, Dr. Ball launched Howard County’s first Annual Financial Literacy Summit in 2007 providing resources and empowering our residents to make responsible financial decisions. This year will mark the fourth annual event stressing the importance of financial education as a means of economic sustainability.

Dr. Ball has been honored with numerous awards including the Louis Goldstein Award for Democratic Spirit, the Kittleman Award for Legislative Leadership, and the Community Champion of the Year Award. He has also demonstrated his commitment and passion for education with his volunteer efforts on the Howard County Public School System Leadership Task Force and Student Performance Review Committee.

Dr. Ball holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Religion from Towson State University, a Master of Arts in Legal and Ethical Studies from the University of Baltimore, where he was nominated for the Spirit of Excellence Award, and a Doctor of Education from Morgan State University. He is also a member of Kappa Delta Pi, an International Honor Society in Education.

He and his wife, Shani D. Ball, R.N., B.S.N., are the proud parents of two children, Alexis and Alyssa.
