The Honorable Doctor Calvin Ball was elected to represent the 2nd District in 2006. District 2 includes the Columbia villages of Long Reach and Oakland Mills as well as Elkridge, Ellicott City, and Jessup. On December 4, 2006, Calvin Ball was elected the youngest Chairperson of the Council in Howard County history in a brief legislative session held in Ellicott City immediately following the installation of members of the newly elected Council. Dr. Ball served as Chairperson of the County Council until December of 2007 and currently serves as Chairperson of the Zoning Board -- the county's zoning authority which guides the future growth of the county. Calvin is a Maryland native and Columbia resident, where he served three terms on The Oakland Mills Village Board. Calvin has the distinct honor of having been the first Community Organizer in Howard County, facilitating neighborhood revitalization in the Village of Oakland Mills. He has also served as a Howard County Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician. Understanding how important the partnership among educators, community members and businesses can be, Calvin has served as a member of various committees including those working on Howard County Chamber of Commerce’s Educator of the Year and the Chamber of Commerce’s Workforce Readiness. Additionally, he launched Howard County’s first Annual Financial Literacy Summit and has won numerous awards including the Louis Goldstein Award for Democratic Spirit and the Kittleman Award for Legislative Leadership. Calvin has also demonstrated his commitment to k-12 education by volunteering with several efforts including the Howard County Public School System Leadership Task Force and Student Performance Review Committee. Calvin holds a B.A. in Philosophy and Religion from Towson State University, an M.A. in Legal and Ethical Studies from the University of Baltimore, where he was nominated for the Spirit of Excellence Award, and a Doctor of Education from Morgan State University. He is also a member of Kappa Delta Pi, an International Honor Society in Education. He is married to Shani D. Ball, R.N., B.S.N., a school nurse. They are proud parents of two children, Alexis and Alyssa. |
