It tracks data for current and previous (up to the year 2000) development activity, including: pre-submission community meetings, hearings, development plans and waiver petitions. The Center will move into its new larger space, which will be located at 9900 Washington Boulevard in North Laurel, in July. “When the Center first opened in 2007, it was designed and staffed to accommodate approximately 500 service calls a year; this past year the Center responded to approximately 1,900 calls for help from individuals and families,” said County Executive Ulman. “It is easy to understand such a growing need when we all know the economy has put even more families at risk. By nearly doubling the amount of space, the Center will be able to serve more Howard County residents and offer them a broader range of services. It’s the right thing to do.” The new site is also more accessible for both walkers and people who rely on public transportation. The additional space will allow for the addition of other service partners and increased collaboration. “The North Laurel-Savage Multi-Service Center is a true testament to community partnering that continues to exceed our expectations,” said Bita Dayhoff, President of Howard County’s Community Action Council, the lead agency in this initiative. “The program serves as a tremendous model of local government, non-profits, and private foundations working together to provide stability to the underserved.” In addition to the Community Action Council, nine other organizations offer services at the Center: Family and Children Services; Foreign-born Information and Referral Network; Howard County’s Department of Social Services; Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center; Domestic Violence Center; Legal Aid Bureau; WIC; Workforce Development; and Howard Community College. Services offered at the Center include counseling, legal assistance; social services, immigrant programs; and food, energy and housing assistance. Funding for the Center is provided by Howard County Government, the Horizon Foundation and the Columbia Foundation.
